Kwaku Adumatta, an Accra-based marriage and relationship counselor, has advised women not to enter into marriages because of family commitments or circumstances.
“People need to understand that marriage must not be made dependent on any conditions or family circumstances,” he explained, adding that there are cases where women accept marriage proposals because their families depend on the man’s family for one or the other want to be grateful to others for help.
He advised women to make wise decisions when falling victim to some of these conditional marriages.
Mr Adumatta gave this advice against the background of the tragic death of Nigerian gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, best known for the hit song “Ekwueme”, who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in an abusive marriage.
On the midday news on Accra 100.5FM, Tuesday 12 April 2022, he warned that “you don’t get married if there is a condition”.
He further cautioned women not to know that their lives matter when they are in abusive relationships. Therefore, if they feel threatened in a relationship, they should report it quickly to the police or a prominent member of the family.
According to late Nigerian artist sister Favor Made, the singer died of complications from a clot of blood in her chest after her husband Peter Nwachukwu kicked her.
“The husband, Mr Peter Nwachukwu, hit her in the chest with his leg… she fell and he took her to the hospital but he didn’t even tell us. It was her friend who lives in Ebonyi state who called her twin sister,” the late singer’s sister told Vanguard Nigeria in an interview.
“Before we told her to get out of the marriage, we told her not to divorce, that it’s just a breakup. But she felt that God was against divorce.”
The sister also revealed that the singer’s husband had abused her since their marriage.
The singer believed her husband would change, despite her family’s advice to separate from her husband.
Mr. Peter Nwachukwu was arrested.
